Keep Your Brain Sharp with the New MIND Diet

A healthy diet can indeed keep the body functioning efficiently but then according to research the sharpness of mind declines with age regardless of what your diet is. No Cheese and Butter: MIND diet discourages products like cheese, butter that is mainly dairy products and the reason is their saturated fat content. Even no-fat or low-fat versions of dairy foods are kept out of the list of MIND Diet. It’s not like dairy products lack potential to be in the healthful diet, but their effect on brain health is something that is not affirmed. Hence this food category doesn’t suit well in the MIND diet.

Yes to fat: The MIND diet agrees on certain fat types rather than limiting the amount of fat intake. According to survey reports, participants prone to heart disease who were randomised to a Mediterranean diet having their supplements with either mixed nuts or extra-virgin olive oil fared well on cognitive tests than participants who were on a low-fat Mediterranean diet.

Mixed nuts and extra-virgin oil have a high content of unsaturated fats, and reduction in levels of inflammatory markers was seen in the blood after consuming these foods. This inflammation in the brain is believed to assist the development of dementia. On the other hand, the MIND diet discourages foods that are high in saturated and trans-fat.
